Kitchen Hood: HVI/AHAM Certification
Many smaller or budget-focused brands, as well as some luxury import manufacturers, do not participate in HVI (Home Ventilating Institute) or AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) certification programs which is required to pass the HERS/ECC test.
While major brands like Broan-NuTone, GE, and Whirlpool are typically certified, you will often find no HVI/AHAM listings for:
* Zline: Their hoods are popular for aesthetics but generally lack these specific performance certifications.
* Hauslane: While they provide performance specs, they are often not listed in the HVI directory.
* Generic/Import Brands: Many brands sold primarily on Amazon or at big-box stores (such as Cosmo, Winflo, or Vesta) often skip these voluntary certifications to keep costs down.
* High-End Custom/Boutique Brands: Some luxury brands rely on internal testing rather than third-party HVI or AHAM verification.
Why it matters
HVI and AHAM ratings are the 'Truth in Advertising' stamps for ventilation. They guarantee that the hood was tested under real-world pressure (with ducts) by an independent third party. When you buy a certified hood, you aren't just buying a fan; you're buying a performance guarantee that it will actually clear the smoke, keep the noise under 3 sones, and-most importantly-pass your California Title 24 inspection.
The HERS/ECC test (Title 24) requires that the installed range hood be HVI or AHAM certified to pass inspection.
It will typically also need to have an airflow rating of at least 300 CFM and sound rating of 3 sones or under.
